Kurri Kurri Tidy Towns Commitee
Kurri Kurri Tidy Towns Committee was formed 19 years ago (1988), initiated by the then labour councillor Errol Kennedy. Kurri Kurri tidy towns was formed, involving the townships of Pelaw Main, Spoin Kop, Stanford Merthyr, Heddon Greta, Loxford, Cliftleigh and Kurri Kurri. Support has come from all sectors of the community, and due to this support, an active committee, participation in tidy towns, the town and our projects has received in excess of 20 awards from Keep Australia Beautiful N.S.W. during our 19 year history.
Kurri Kurri was awarded the “overall state winners” award in 1993 as the tidiest town in N.S.W. Outcomes
of winning the overall state award have been the responsibility of hosting the following year’s (1994) “Keep Australia Beautiful” awards presentation weekend, which was a huge undertaking for our committee, with Kurri Kurri hosting 700 visiting Ttidy Towner’s from throughout the state.

The main benefit of the awards Kurri has received, has been the activity they have generated and the involvement of all sectors of the community. Projects undertaken by the committee include:
- Tree plantings, gardens and an inground watering system and construction of new brick entry at the cemetery
- design, fabrication, and erection of a town clock
- Heritage trail walk and other fund raisers for much needed palliative care equipment
- the Heddon Greta to Kurri Kurri cycleway/walkway
- publication of “Visions of Yesteryear”
- issue of “Home of the Month” awards together with “tidy home and yard” cards
- obtaining of a “licensed” walking access along old Stanford Railway line to form part of what we call a heritage/nature walk and upgrading 1.5 km of the walking surface
- In partnership with “Towns with Heart” committee, development of town murals project and Kurri Kurri centenary celebrations, KK Nostalgia Festival & Cruise weekend
- Erection of signage depicting our local sporting champions that have represented their chosen sports, nationally and internationally
- Compilation of an LGA walking trail booklet in association with Samaritans and Cessnock City Council
- Renewal and upgrading works to gardens and signage at Log of Knowledge and Chalmers, parks in partnership with Kurri Weston Greening Group and Cessnock City Council
The Kurri Kurri Tidy Town committee is very proud of their work within the community, however, none of it would have been possible without the assistance and co-operation of Cessnock City Council, local Councillors and all our dedicated sponsors, community groups, KK chamber of commerce and their many other helpers.
